This summer has been crazy, but also super fun! From going to the pool, exploring hiking trails, to simply playing outside, I’ve been able to really enjoy the outdoors and the unusually mild summer here in DC this year. But between the chlorine water at the public pool and the all-day sunshine, my hair has taken a major beating. Its become a little dull, UV-damaged, and dry. So, in true BITG fashion, we’re making a yummy hair mask out of only good-for-you ingredients that are good enough to eat – literally!

I truly believe in the philosophy that you should only use products that you’re able to consume. Your skin is your largest organ, after all, which means it absorbs everything. Of course, there are some exceptions like essential oils, which you should never consume but can be an amazing addition to your bath and beauty products due to their amazing healing & antibacterial properties. For this DIY recipe, we’re recruiting über-moisturizing & nourishing coconut and olive oils, nutrient-rich & hydrating raw honey, shine-enhancing apple cider vinegar, and some peppermint essential oil to add a refreshing scent.

To ensure this hair mask is absorbed and effective, use it on dry hair, as wet or damp hair is likely to repel some of the oils. You can also use a shampoo//baking soda mixture to cleanse your hair of any product gunk the day before or morning of by simply mixing a dollop of your favorite shampoo and a tablespoon of baking soda, then shampooing as usual. Allow the shampoo mixture to sit for a couple minutes while you wash your face or shave your legs, etc, and then wash out as you normally would. This really helps to strip out any build-up that easily occurs from using any kind of hair product – even if you use minimal products like me. Beware not to use daily, though, as it may also strip natural oils from your hair that are necessary for growth and optimal hair health. Keep the treatment to a once-a-month occurrence or even less often.

This mask, however, is great for adding into your routine a few times a month. I tend to use this more often in the summer when I’m in the sun a lot or winter when damage from the harsh cold and indoor heaters is greater.

Moisturizing Hair Mask for Luscious Locks

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 heaping tbsp coconut oil, melted
  • 2 tbsp raw honey 
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • 5 drops peppermint essential oil

Mixing all the ingredients together in a small bowl, use a whisk to create a smooth and luxurious blend. You’ll end up with a bit of a runny concoction, but storing it in the fridge or freezer for ten minutes or so will bring the oils closer to a solid so its easy to handle. [Just remember that it will warm & become liquid again in your hands, so quick application is best!] Next, apply the blend to dry hair, massaging it into both your ends and roots – especially if you tend to have a drier, itchy scalp. Leave the mixture on your hair for about 30 minutes – sometimes I’ll leave it on all morning, though! When the mask is ready to be removed, simply wash your hair with your favorite restorative shampoo, condition with a light conditioner, and vióla – Super shiny, revitalized, and beautiful locks!
