Lately I have been C R A V I N G Springtime – I know I’m not the only one! Sunshine, flowers, and warmer temperatures. We finally have had a little taste of springtime in DC this past week, so I’m ready to shed dark winter days and feel alive again. Which is why after feeling quite sick [nausea, upset stomach, and fatigue – yuck, no thank you] for a couple weeks, I followed my intuition to alkaline foods – I’ve been craving more meditation & yoga, less stress & winter blues; more veggies, less meat; and more herbal tea, less coffee. If you’re unfamiliar with an alkaline diet, it basically breaks down like this :
Our blood maintains an optimal pH between 7.35 and 7.45, which is slightly alkaline [neutral on the pH scale is 7]. This is critical in maintaining overall health, but can be altered by many factors, including breath, stress levels, water intake, nutrition, and movement. Often times, when we’re stressed, eating junky food, or avoiding exercise, for example, the blood pH lowers [becoming more acidic], which in turn may cause mild acidosis or a simple imbalance in your body. If this behavior continues, however, you could be setting yourself up to experience disease since your blood’s pH levels become totally out of whack. Simply put : stress, heavily acidic foods, shallow breathing, dehydration, etc. . those things are toxic. And in the long run could really put a damper on your path to wellness.
If this whole Winter thing isn’t working out for you either, and you’ve been hibernating, stressed, and/or making less-than-ideal food choices lately, then maybe creating more alkalinity in your diet [& lifestyle] could be an excellent solution right now, or an important piece of the puzzle, for the healthy life you’re striving for. Eating a little less meat & greasy chips, practicing deep breathing, keeping your body hydrated with clean water, and managing your stress levels can’t do any harm! Which is exactly why I made this amazingly delicious, tastes-like-Spring smoothie as a little way to cram in some serious alkaline goodness first thing in the morning!

Alkalizing Berry Smoothie
Makes one serving.
- 1/2 banana
- 1 cup frozen berries [I used a mix of frozen organic raspberries, blueberries & blackberries]
- juice from 1/2 lemon
- 1 tbsp hemp hearts
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
- 2 tbsp aloe vera gel
- 1 scoop greens powder [like Amazing Grass’ Green Superfood], or a large handful of your favorite dark, leafy greens
- 4 oz coconut water
Combine all of the ingredients in a high-speed blender & blend until smooth, adding more coconut water if the consistency is too thick. Put a flower in your hair & sip on this smoothie with thoughts of Springtime & sunshine!
Not only are the powerful greens in this smoothie chockfull of alkalizing muscle, but lemon is too! It may seem a bit counterintuitive, but lemon & lime are highly alkaline – in fact, that’s why sipping water with lemon first thing in the morning is such a great way to jumpstart your body to be a wellness powerhouse all day long. Besides greens & lemon, chia, coconut oil, AND aloe would all be placed on the moderately to super alkaline chart. Plus, every single one of these ingredients is A M A Z I N G for your skin – helping you glow even more! Now really – do you need another reason to fit this smoothie into your AM routine?!
