That time is coming – when your skin is going to start feeling dull, your outer glow is beginning to fade, and that summer tan? You can kiss it goodbye. Although we’re not totally into the cold, heavy sweater season yet, you’re going to want to keep your skin feeling fresh and smooth – and starting now. Lucky for you, I’ve got you covered for what lay ahead!
My favorite, favorite way to feel smooth and sexy, even when I’m in my fleecy sweats, is using a sugar scrub. Not only does it make my skin feel ahhmazing, but it feels so luxurious to shake up my normal, boring shower routine in the mornings. The three scents I’ve come up with are incredible for the fall and winter seasons, and will have you struttin’ like a Victoria’s Secret model in your unmentionables because you’re just going to feel that good [you might want to turn your heater up if you’re planning to do so]!
It’s so important to stimulate your skin and remove any dead cells that build up. Your skin is your biggest organ – did you know that?! – so its beneficial to treat it with love and care, especially as the weather cools and natural exfoliation slows. Just like the skin on your face, the skin on your body deserves a nice scrub-a-dub about twice a week – but don’t over-do it because you could risk irritation and redness. Increasing blood flow and stimulating your skin will help your body naturally detox and over time will help decrease cellulite, along with keeping your skin healthy overall! These are so easy to make and the base ingredients are probably already in your kitchen! Honestly, I never use processed sugar in my kitchen [besides during the occasional pickling sesh], but I always keep a nice stash around for these scrubs. Sugar is my favorite to use because it doesn’t sting on dry skin or cuts as sea salt does and it also dissolves really nicely in the shower – even if you make a big mess and sugar is everywhere you can spray some water around and it will dissipate easily. I will warn you, though, that the coconut oil causes the shower floor to be a little slippery, so be careful!
*When you choose which one to use [sometimes I want to make all three!], gather all the ingredients, and simply mix together in a bowl. Make the scrubs fresh each time you use them, or make the day before and place in the fridge until you’re ready. If you don’t use all the scrub at once you can keep it in the fridge for up to a couple days, too.*
Coffee Cinnamon Sugar Scrub
The BITG Coffee Cinnamon Scrub is stimulating and the perfect pick-me-up first thing in the morning when you roll out of bed or after your AM yoga flow. Ground coffee will be your new anti-cellulite best friend and cinnamon offers a warming sensation excellent for those chilly days.
1 cup coconut oil
3/4 cup coarse sugar [I recommend turbinado]
1/4 cup coffee grounds [reuse from your coffee maker or french press!]
1 tsp ground cinnamon
Apple Mint Scrub
The BITG Apple Mint Sugar Scrub is an amazingly refreshing choice for those mornings when you’re not feeling ready to take on the world just yet. Malic acid from the apple acts as an excellent exfoliant booster & peppermint essential oil is an incredible headache soother, sense awakener, and stress reliever. Its a great way to awaken your mind and rejuvenate your skin so you’re ready to take on anything thrown your way as soon as you step out of your shower.
1 cup coconut oil
1/2 cup coarse sugar
1/2 cup apple [1/2 of a small apple] cut into tiny pieces & slightly smashed with a fork
5 – 10 drops peppermint oil [depending on how strong you prefer the scent]
Pumpkin Chili Scrub
The BITG Pumpkin Chili Sugar Scrub is chock-full of vitamins A & C – both powerful antioxidants – as well as alpha hydroxy acids which promote cell renewal and brightening of the skin. Pumpkin is also high in zinc, which is amazing for skin health & acne, while the chili is extremely stimulating, also helping to reduce tough cellulite. Caution: Feel free to use on your face if you’re concerned about acne or acne scarring, but use very gently and leave the chili out because it will be too irritating for the facial area.
1/2 cup coconut oil
1/2 cup coarse sugar
1/2 cup pumpkin pureé [not pumpkin pie filling if you’re using canned pumpkin]
1/2 tsp chili powder
I am so excited about all three of these scrubs and am looking forward to using them throughout the fall and wintertime. My skin is already thanking me and my glow is seriously shining through. I love, love, love the way my exfoliated skin is so smooth & smells so great after each use, and also how the coconut oil leaves my limbs über-moisturized. You can certainly trade the coco oil out for another like olive, almond, or castor oil if those are more convenient or preferred.
